Jesus said, "I can of mine own self do nothing"

Jesus said, "I can of mine own self do nothing." He also said, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." I rejoice and am "exceeding glad" that in "Science and Health with Key to Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy I have found a spiritual and practical interpretation of the divine writings which has brought health, peace of mind, and priceless blessings. It has been an unfailing help at all times and under all conditions. One of its greatest blessings to me has been the overcoming of many worldly desires, for I had been very worldly-minded. After having read Science and Health for some two or three weeks, I went on a visit to a friend, who was as worldly in thought as I had been. After five or six days of most unpleasant experience, which was brought about by my habit of incessantly talking Science and acting inconsistently with what I said, I came home physically ill. For the first time I called for help from a practitioner, and was healed in one treatment.

At this time my husband was in a business which led the public to the pursuit of pleasure. I had taken part in this excitement for some time and had enjoyed it, but after reading Science and Health for a few weeks longer I did not care to go to this place of amusement. I, however, thought it right to go with my husband, even though I no longer cared to participate, so I continued to attend. This brought me an early and profitable experience. As I watched those taking part in this amusement, which had so lately seemed to bring me much pleasure, there came a revelation that I believe could have come to me in no other way. I was able to see myself as others had seen me, and to recognize the tendency of the human mind to criticize, judge, and condemn. It seemed as though a search-light had been turned on my past experience, which lay spread out like a panorama before me. It grew more and more distasteful to me, until I could say from my heart, concerning this phase of worldliness, "The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me."

After this revelation and others of like kind, I began to look a little closer into my home life, into my relation to my neighbors, and to mankind in general. The work to be done within seemed appalling, but God's grace was sufficient for me, and I was given courage to begin to solve my problems. Each day I have been given strength to work patiently with myself in overcoming all that is unlike God. While I am deeply greateful for all that has been done in purifying my thought, I realize that much yet remains to be done. I know that it can and will be done through the application of Christian Science. I am working joyously each day, never looking back except to gather evidence for more gratitude and love for our cause, and for our dear Leader who so nobly labored to bring this truth to our benighted understanding.
