The critic in the Mountain View "Signs of the Times,"...

Mountain View (Cal.) Register-Leader

The critic in the Mountain View "Signs of the Times," who classes Christian Science with the "mystic religions of India," shows an entire misapprehension of the subject, for Christian Science is not in any sense allied to the teachings of occultism or hypnotism, but is diametrically opposed to those teachings; nor is there anything mysterious about Christian Science. The first tenet as given in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, is as follows: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life" (p. 497). As to the "hundreds of thousands of men and women of culture and education" who have been healed of diseases which the critic claims were "only in their imagination," the gentleman seems to forget that the large majority of these cases had been carefully diagnosed by the leading physicians of this country; many were in our sanitariums and hospitals, where they had been given up to die, and only came to Christian Science as the last resort; therefore there could have been no mistake as to the genuineness of their healing, which is explained by the psalmist, who says, "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions."

The day has passed when one can lightly cavil at Christian Science healing, for these cases are too numerous and too well authenticated to be passed by with doubt by any who really want to know the truth of the matter. When the critic refers to the thousands of "educated and cultured" people who are adherents of Christian Science, he should pause and consider the obvious fact that if Christian Science were the conglomeration of superstition and error which the gentleman has mistakenly represented it to be, these intelligent people could not possibly be long deceived by it. Christian Science is a demonstrable religion; it is the religion of the Bible; it is the truth which Jesus taught and practised.
