About two years ago I came to Christian Science and was healed within a short time of lung trouble of a year's standing. In the middle of last summer I was taken with a severe attack of appendicitis, and the physician who was called in declared that the case was a serious one and demanded an operation within twenty-four hours, and that it would have to be performed the following forenoon. I however neigher took medicine nor followed the prescriptions of the physician, who had been summoned at my family's request. I felt too weak to work for myself in Christian Science and therefore asked a lady who formerly had done good work for me to take up treatment. I experienced more love than I am able to tell, and words are inadequate to express my gratitude. In this instance the words became true: "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." I improved daily, although the operation had not been performed, and in about two weeks' time I began to help with the housework.

In the beginning of August I took a trip to the Black Forest with my mother and one of my children. I had engaged only one room, as I did not know that my mother expected to join us, and when we arrived we were told that it was impossible to get even a little chamber, that people had to go to near-by villages every day or leave again by train, as they were unable to find accommodations. Our efforts being of no avail, a similar fate seemed to be ours. I remained quiet, denying the error constantly, and declaring the truth voiced by Christ Jesus, "In my Father's house are many mansions." I held fast to that thought, and shortly before the last train left we were offered two rooms, which of course we were very glad to accept. I felt very grateful when going to sleep in that house, and during my sojourn there I had the opportunity of helping a sick child, who was bedridden at the time when we were staying there. The mother was very much troubled at the thought that God might possibly take the little one away from her, but after I had treated the child for several days in Christian Science all pain had disappeared, although one of her legs was still shortened. The child walked with us daily into the woods and was so full of joy that we all felt happy to have her around. Since the end of the summer vacation she is able to go to school every day and learns her lessons without difficulty.

I myself had a remarkable experience about the same time. One day while we were picking berries an insect bit me, and in a very short time I discovered that the place was very much swollen and discolored. The pain became unbearable, and a physician who was called at my mother's request stated that it was a case of poisoning. For a moment I was frightened, but when I caught myself entertaining such thoughts I felt ashamed. Had not God helped me before? Why should fear now try to creep in? I then immediately recalled the words: "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." I believe that I took a long stride through the mere fact that I resisted the sense of fear. I worked all night and declared the truth of being, and after two days the error had completely disappeared, solely through the application of Christian Science. I could tell of many instances in which I and my children have experienced good during the past two years.
