STEPHEN A. CHASE, C.S.D.

There is no more ringing call to the Christian warfare than that voiced by the apostle Paul, who knew whereof he spake when he exhorted: "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses." Few indeed have heeded this call more loyally than our brother, Stephen A. Chase, C.S.D., whose twenty years' service as a member of the Board of Directors of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, has been one of unswerving devotion and fidelity to the cause in which every loyal Christian Scientist enlists, "to lessen evil, disease, and death" (Science and Health, p. 450).

Our brother has not laid down his arms defeated; he is continuing in that grander warfare at whose close the "crown of righteousness" awaits the victor, since "rising above the false, to the true evidence of Life, is the resurrection that takes hold of eternal Truth;" it is the knowledge that "coming and going belong to mortal consciousness. God is 'the same yesterday, and today, and forever' " (Unity of Good, p. 61).

It was during the early years of Mrs. Eddy's residence in Boston that Mr. Chase, though his home was always in Fall River, became interested in Christian Science, and in 1885 he took a course of instruction with its Discoverer and Founder. Born and reared in the faith of the Society of Friends, his quiet, unassuming demeanor gave but little hint of the sturdy determination and fixed purpose which made him a bulwark of strength in the years when the followers of a dauntless Leader were truly "defenders of the faith."
