A recent visiting missioner to Melbourne took occasion...

Camberwell and Hawthorne (Aus.) Advertiser

A recent visiting missioner to Melbourne took occasion to make some platform remarks on Christian Science which ignorance of the subject explained but hardly justified. That the man in the street is now to some extent able to discriminate between the truth and error of the ordinary platitudes which are sometimes put forward in reference to Christian Science, was evidenced by a hearer who, though not a Christian Scientist, asked the preacher kindly to quote his authority for a statement made, a request which it is understood was not complied with. Critics should understand something of what they criticize, and they who do not understand Christian Science should not attempt to explain it. The truth of Christian Science is not a matter of opinion. It is capable of demonstration. Its proofs are the test of Christianity which Jesus demanded, "He that believeth on me, the works that I shall he do also."

Never did a convert to Christ, and probably few if any adherents to sect or creed, become such through pulpit misrepresentation of the Christian faith of others; and the Christian Scientist finds no time to discuss or condemn the religious views of his neighbor. "To his own master he standeth or falleth." Christian Science is drawing the world's attention to the fact that Christianity has lost none of its primitive efficacy to heal the sick sinful; and the world is daily becoming more interested to find that in Christian Science health and happiness, moral and physical well-being, have been attained by many who had been unable to find them elsewhere. Many who yesterday were uncompromising opponents of Christian Science, not dormant or hesitating in their efforts to pile obloquy and ridicule on Mrs. Eddy and her teachings, have today reached the point of admission that "there is something in Christian Science," that Christian Scientists have got hold of a genuine truth. Christian Science should be encouraged, not resisted, by all who have at heart the moral and physical welfare of the human race. Ridicule, abuse, and misrepresentation will never check its phenomenal advancement. It will continue to progress because it teaches a scientific or accurate and effective knowledge of God and His Christ, bringing health to the sick comfort to the sorrowing; and until they have something demonstrably better to offer in its place, militant missioners might well take to heart the good old advice of Gamaliel, and for the very excellent reason he adduced.
