My first impression of Christian Science was gained...

My first impression of Christian Science was gained from the healing of my wife, many years ago. It was such a clear proof of the power of Truth to heal that I had to believe, and it brought the desire on the part of both my wife and myself to understand what had accomplished this marvelous cure. This led, eventually, to that dependence and reliance upon the one God which has since been the comfort and the joy of our lives. To recall the incident of long ago for the lesson it may teach, let me say that my wife was lying mortally sick. The old family physician, devoted and conscientious, had exhausted his skill and was baffled. My wife was a member of an orthodox church and I was an attendant at the services. The Bible was in our home, but it was a dead book, there was no life-giving meaning in it for us. In this connection I often think of that quotation from Science and Health (p. 241): "Take away the spiritual signification of Scripture, and that compilation can do no more for mortals than can moonbeams to melt a river of ice."

At this juncture, a kind neighbor, whom we knew but slightly, had the inspiration and the courage to come to our door. She saw my wife's sister and said to her, "Your sister does not need to suffer. God is not making her suffer. There is a knowledge of Truth that will heal her. It is Christian Science." She also left some pamphlets and other Christian Science reading matter. The encouraging message was carried to the sick-room and instantly aroused hope in the patient. She wished to read for herself and soon gained sufficient strength. She seemed to recuperate with the sole idea of pursuing this subject further. To the wonder of all, within a few days she was able to go to a practitioner in a neighboring city, and after two weeks' treatment was entirely and permanently healed. From being a sick and ailing woman, she has ever since been one of the strongest. Such instances, which I have since found are not infrequent in Christian Science, certainly encourage us never to withhold the word that will lift our neighbor.
