If, as you suggest, Christian Science is irrational in its disregard of medical advice and help, it surely follows that to be a Christian it is necessary to be irrational. The Bible distinctly teaches healing by spiritual means. So strongly has this been forced upon Harnack that that great scholar, in his book on Luke the physician, declares: "His medical profession seems to have led him to Christianity, for he embraced that religion in the conviction that by its means, and by quite new methods, he would be enabled to heal disease and drive out evil spirits." Those new methods Harnack clearly did not regard as either drugs or surgery; he described them in two words—"Christian Science."
