THE NEW YEAR—A FRIEND

A friend has depths of character.
Fragrant and rare as Alpine flowers;
Then make a friend of each new year.
And search for treasure in its hours,—

For happiness in others' good,
For justice, honesty, and worth,
For generous thought, untouched by greed,
For Truth, that gave the new year birth.

And as its hours and days increase,
'Twill peace unfold for those who pray.
And work, and watch, through its swift flight,
And struggle toward the light alway.

'Twill also bring thee joy to know,
If thou hast filled with love this year,
It bears upon its time-spread wings
Another friend, to hold as dear.
