As a regular member of an orthodox church for twentytwo years, I, like many, never understood the inconsistent literal or material interpretation of the Bible. It means absolutely nothing, and the ridiculous floundering of some clergymen, in their attempts to explain away those parts of the Bible they don't understand, is helping to empty their churches. If I want the Bible, pure, unadulterated, consistent, and spiritually, not materially, interpreted, I must go to the despised but growing neighbors, the Christian Science churches, where I attend very often, and get only the Bible, consistently interpreted. Often I have to stand for lack of room. Whatever you or I think of Christian Science, mankind feel instinctively that what it teaches is true; that is, that we have a right to health and happiness; that these are man's birthright, and that misery—the results of hate, fear, envy, jealousy, greed, doubt, graft, self-righteousness, conceit, and selfishness—plays no legitimate part in God's plan, but must be gotten rid of or blotted out of our consciousness to let in the opposite mental qualities or characteristics. When the churches look within for their trouble, and not without, their power may return.
