[Written for the Sentinel.]

Perpetual Christmas

Not just one day of jubilation!
Not just one burst of long-hushed praise!
Joy knows no time-bound limitation.
Love knows no hush, nor fixed days.

Not just this time of fitful giving!
Not just one day of bounteousness!
In measured love were measured living,
The one true Giver ne'er gives less.

Not just one day named for the Master!
Not just a memory of the Star!
The Wisemen's hearts had beat no faster,
Had they not seen it from afar.

Not ours a joy sealed till to-morrow,
Nor love that knows a yesterday,
Nor gifts that must their impulse borrow.
The Christ has said, "I am—alway!"

Alway!—The Christ-tide knows no ceasing.
The Star still shines! The angels' song
Rings out, with joy each day increasing,
Since all days to the Christ belong!
