A Reminiscence

For a long time we talked, she deep in her seeming distress,—loss of money, a beloved member of her family gone, ill in mind and body,—and she sought relief through Christian Science. Finally, when nothing seemed to lift her thought from the contemplation of error, I said, "Suppose you sat in a dark, dreary dungeon, without a ray of light, and one came to you, and said, 'Come out into the light, come away from this darkness; the sunshine is beautiful, there is everything to make you happy; you need not stay in this dungeon, God's light is free to all, come out into the light,—and you should say, 'No, there is no sunshine; it is dark there, too, far I see only darkness everywhere,' At last, however, you yield to entreaty, step outside of your dungeon, and at once you say, 'Why, it is light! Oh, how happy I am!' And thus you must come into the light of Christian Science, and see that just so long as you make a reality of evil and regard your troubles as actually existent, you are refusing to let the light of divine Truth dispel evil and bring you to the realization of your right to know that God, good, is all."

At this moment the clouds lifted, and as she listened to the word of Truth, she joyfully exclaimed, "I will come out into the light." So she went away happy; her eye had become brighter, her step more elastic, the color had come to her pale cheeks, and once more the weary had found rest in Truth and Love.
