In gratitude for the blessings which Christian Science...

In gratitude for the blessings which Christian Science has brought to me, the time has come when I should acknowledge it. In the year 1890 my wife spoke to me about being treated in Christian Science. This was the first I had ever heard of it. I thought favorably of her doing so, as she was then suffering from what had been called by the best doctors, heart trouble. To my surprise, in a very short time after the first treatment, she was restored to perfect health, and still continues without a symptom of the old trouble.

On April 22, 1895, I was taken with paralysis of my lower limbs,—from my hips down to my feet. I managed to perform my office duties during the first day, and finally arrived home at night in a very bad condition. The next morning, thinking I would get along all right, I started to take the train for Boston. I had not gone far when I had to give up, and get a carriage to take me back home. Upon arriving, the driver was obliged to carry me to my apartment, as I could not stand alone, and was in great pain. My wife asked if she should call a doctor, or if I would like to be treated by Christian Science. I chose the latter. Being in great distress I gave no thought as to which I wanted.

She went to see same practitioner who had helped her, and I was given an absent treatment, and before her return, which was not more than a half hour, the pain had all left me, and I fell asleep. In a short time the one who treated me came, and after talking with me, explained what Christian Science teaches: namely, that divine Mind is the healer, and that this Mind governed the body, and that man is God's child. I was told to look to the spiritual, and not at the material body. This gave me food for thought. I was also asked to read Science and Health in connection with the Bible.
