On a stone over the entrance of my old home, is the Bible...

On a stone over the entrance of my old home, is the Bible inscription, "Seek, and ye shall find." On one occasion my school teacher said, "Children, don't believe that our religion is the best there is." These words and this Scriptural passage have often come to my memory in later years.

In kindergarten, I was told that God is Love and all good. Then later on I was told in school that God sends us sickness and evil to bring us back to Him. These contradictions I could not believe, since they do not harmonize: therefore I finally laid my Bible aside as a book which I was not to understand.

Fifteen years ago, my youngest brother, then seven years old, was afflicted with carious bones. He heard of a man who healed the sick without medicine. I would not believe this, yet no medicine could help my brother, or even relieve his great pain. I myself had always been feeble and was constantly suffering. My mother had often said that she did not believe I would live to grow up.
