Spiritual Discernment

WHEN the great Teacher prepared the students whom he first called, for their work of healing, he gave them certain definite instructions which would be of great value to Christian Scientists, if understood and obeyed.

Among other things he said, "Behold I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves;" and later he warned them against wolves in sheep's clothing. Jesus recognized the danger awaiting his disciples in their early efforts to heal the sick, and cast out evils, but he also knew the protection available for them, else had it been useless to send them on a mission of such deep import to the world.

It is hardly necessary to say that the sheep are wholly unable to protect themselves from the wolves, but if we take the definition of sheep as given in our text-book (p. 594), a new light is thrown upon the subject. It is the following of the Leader's thought or direction which insures the safety of the sheep and also of the lambs. The Christ says, "My sheep hear my voice," they learn to distinguish between the call of Truth and the demand of error, and therein lies their safety.
