An Evening Query

Who has been the guest of the day?

When the glad greeting of the morning sunshine banishes the dream of night, two guests come knocking at the door of consciousness. One radiant with gladness and gratitude, aglow with the activity of life and love, asking of the day only time for the service of God and man, and knowing but one law,—harmony; the other anxious, full of suggestions of apathy, of discontent, of fear; self-distrusting, whispering persistently of discord, arguing for heredity, for temperament, for material pleasures, material necessities, even material pain. What gruesome fascination is there claiming a power to hold us to the spectral, the counterfeit, the false, even while we know we are in the very presence of purity and peace and joy?

This our morning experience is unique, although it obtained in the Garden of Eden and has been prompt at the awaking of every son and daughter of Adam down to this very morning. Unique, in that guest is host and host is guest and both are claiming to I.
