In Due Time

Boston Times

THE question has often been asked, If Christian Science is really the religion of Jesus Christ, why was it not discovered before? Why was it left for Mrs. Eddy to bring forth, and why is it necessary that one should have the assistance of Mrs. Eddy's book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"? Why not go to the Bible directly? The same question could be asked concerning the advent of Jesus, Why did he not come sooner? If his coming into the world was of importance to the salvation of mankind, why did he not come earlier? The Scriptures state that in due time he came. Without doubt, Truth working in the consciousness of mankind prepared the way for the coming of the Godlike man, Jesus Christ.

In Science and Health, p. 561, Mrs. Eddy declares: "John the Baptist prophesied the coming of the immaculate Jesus, and he saw in those days the spiritual idea as the Messiah, who would baptize with the Holy Ghost,—Divine Science. As Elias represents the fatherhood of God, through Jesus, so the Revelator completes this figure with woman, as the spiritual idea or type of God's motherhood. The moon is under her feet. This idea reveals the universe as secondary and tributary to Spirit, whence it borrows its reflected light, substance, life, and intelligence."

The fatherhood of God, that is, the fact that Spirit is the only creator, is illustrated in the conception and birth of Jesus; while the life which he lived in the flesh, comprising what he taught and demonstrated, being understood by mortals, constitutes Christian Science and reveals that God is not only the Father of all creation, but also the Mother thereof. The coming to human consciousness of the truth which Jesus understood and practised and by means of which he accomplished his mighty works, reveals and establishes the conjoined proposition of Christian Science that God is Spirit and Spirit is the only substance, the universe being His expression. This completes in human consciousness the revelation of the fulness and completeness of divine parenthood, that God is not only the Father, but also the Mother of the universe, and teaches that God in His nature and essence may as properly be called Mother as Father.
