Confident though Censured

A PIECE of magnetized steel resting on a pivot becomes a needle which points towards the north pole. Why? Some one answers, "It is influenced by magnetic attraction." But why does it not point eastward or westward? While even the wisest have failed to explain this strange fact in nature, they have long ago ceased to doubt it. People assume great risks, confident that in all latitudes, when left undisturbed by other influences, that needle will turn toward the pole.

When on the ocean, the stars are lost in the night, and all is a waste of billows and tempest, in the midst of darkness and dangers, the mariner watches his needle. The gravest dangers may surround him, but he has confidence and faith in the testimony of this bit of steel. He cannot see the pole toward which the needle points; no, he is looking not at the seen but at the unseen. He knows that thousands have reached their port following the direction of the compass. and he too trusts it. Has he acted wisely? Yes. Does any one censure him? No. Yet that compass is a human invention. and is by no means absolutely reliable. for account must be taken of its variations.

After trusting human theories for years. and finding themselves still adrift on life's stormy sea of false beliefs, thousands of people have turned to Christian Science as a safer guide. and following its light they to-day possess health and peace. They have learned that the Bible is God's compass, steadfastly pointing the way, and they trust their guide implicitly. for it has never failed Do they act wisely? Yes. Are they sometimes censured? Yes. Why?
