The Mystery of Godliness

"AND without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

It seems to me that this verse bears a two-fold meaning. Not only does it bring to our memories the events which happened in our Master's earthly career, but it also prophesies those steps which will be necessary for the development and final acceptance and demonstration of Christian Science.

Great indeed was the mystery of godliness, even when God was manifest in the flesh. We well know how God, or Truth, was manifested through the flesh to the flesh by Jesus of Nazareth. As "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy, p. 228, says: "In the flesh he was appointed to speak God's word to human flesh, and appear to mortals in such a form of humanity as they could understand as well as perceive." He was the first who was pure enough, not only to become conscious of the Christ idea, but to be able to teach it to others, and to demonstrate its power in the healing of sickness and the overcoming of sin.
