Daily goal of gratitude
The beginning of a new year is a wonderful time to express gratitude for the past year’s abundance and for all we will receive in the future.
In my own experience, I’ve found that by being grateful every day, we open our thought to receive the inspiration of divine Love, God. Expressing gratitude is a way to love God and His creation. And that has a healing effect.
A few years ago, at the beginning of the year, I sat down and made a plan for my business based on how I thought the year would unfold—how much business I expected, how I would achieve my daily, weekly, monthly, and annual goals. I wrote out a clearly defined plan, but unfortunately things did not go as I expected. As the busy summer season approached in June, it was obvious that business was off course and our line of credit was going to run out.
Early one morning, as I pondered how these problems would be solved, I got the idea to start writing down everything for which I was grateful. I immediately found a notebook and began keeping a gratitude journal.
Everything started to flow.
Being grateful for the environment around me seemed like a good place to start. I wrote about my appreciation for the clean air and blue skies where I live—in one of the sunniest cities in Canada. I made a point of being thankful for my home, community, and country. I also cherished my business’s wonderful client base and the opportunity to be of service to them every day.
I found it amazing that simply taking the time to write these thoughts down brought me great joy and peace.
Within weeks, business began to improve—projects that had been going on for months came to fruition and business that had been delayed began to get completed. It was as if a cork had been removed from a pipe and everything started to flow.
As usual, the summer was busy, so there wasn’t extra time to worry about the financial situation. I just kept doing what needed to be done on a daily basis and enjoying the fine summer we were having.
One day late in September my wife (who is also our business bookkeeper) came into my office and asked me what I had done differently. She explained that we had paid all the business’s bills and the bank balance was the healthiest it had been in a decade. I felt like getting on my knees to thank God! I told my wife about my gratitude journal. She told me to please never stop being grateful. Believe me, I haven’t. Now my filled gratitude journals are almost too numerous to count.
