God’s witness at the beach

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

Some years ago, my wife and I spent our Saturdays in the summer reading the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy’s writings on our favorite ocean beach in northern Massachusetts.

One of those Saturdays in September, I was thinking about how it’s possible for both Principle and Love to be synonyms for God. Principle seems to convey the idea of a firm unyielding law, and Love seems to convey the idea of warmth, tenderness, and caring. I just couldn’t see how they belonged together—how they could be synonymous.

As I continued to mull over the connection between these two synonyms, I decided to take a swim. A hurricane was developing well out in the Atlantic that day, causing unusually large and powerful waves for that beach. Once I was waist-deep in the water and felt the strong pull of the waves, I realized this was not a day for swimming and went back to my reading.
