Why am I here?

Schools are back in session, and I remember my shaky start. As a sophomore, I transferred to a university in the Midwest with over 30,000 students. My dad had passed on years earlier, my mom worked full-time, one brother attended law school on the West Coast, and the other was serving in the United States Navy.

I wanted to change to a larger school, but once I got there the sprawling, unfamiliar environment overwhelmed me. Even the possibility of befriending my new roommate seemed slim since she spent all her time with a serious boyfriend.

Standing alone in my room on the fifth floor of a new high-rise dormitory, I looked out the window at a busy, populated campus. I was only a few weeks into my first semester, but inside I felt empty, helpless, and totally on my own.
