Protection from sin

I often feel that Christian Science could be called the “Science of sinlessness” because it proves that men and women in their real individuality as children of God are not sinners, since they express God, and further, sin has no foundation. Sin is no more than a mirage, a belief that there is life in matter, a transient existence separate from God. The truth is that there is only one Life, the Life which is God, exclusive of matter. It is within this Life that we find ourselves without sin.

I draw these conclusions from two of my past experiences. One involved a relative who owed our immediate family a large sum of money and refused to repay it. One day she rang to tell us she had broken her toe. It seemed difficult at that time to lend her any sympathy. Instead, we joked with her about the toe and soon ended the call.

Then it hit me that we had failed to show our relative any kindness whatsoever in her pain and discomfort. So I went off by myself to pray and get a clearer view of our unbroken relationship to the loving God who protects each of His children from all harm. As I prayed, slowly but surely compassion for our relative replaced my sense of resentment and moral superiority.
