Thanks to Cynthia Clague for her article “The race set before us” (June 2, 2014, Sentinel). It brought to mind an experience from childhood that I later thought was a great metaphor for running the race.

I was assigned a horse to ride in the annual horse show at my boarding school. I was to ride in an advanced jumping course—over the ring fence, down a large expanse of meadow, and back up the hill into the ring—over many jumps. My horse that year stopped at nearly every jump no matter what I did. We must have looked very funny to the spectators. The next year, I was given a horse that loved the challenge. “Betty” seemed to be having the time of her life. She had the right spirit. And we won!

Now we may not soar through every trial, but we don’t need to come to a strong halt over every one either. The Science of Christ enables us to “run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1) and finish with joy. Ms. Clague brought out some wonderful examples of God’s promises for accomplishments here and now.
