Triumph over evil

Is the devil (or evil in its many insidious guises) still hovering around, despite Jesus’ bold efforts to reject it during that mountaintop temptation over two thousand years ago? And are we turning from such inducements with equal vehemence? “Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Luke 4:8).

While you might be tempted to enter the debate by revisiting the morally reversed world presented by C.S. Lewis in his classic The Screwtape Letters (reissued in an unabridged audio version in August of this year), we’d suggest you turn first to the perspectives offered by our own writers in this issue of the Sentinel.

Among them is Marian English, who is especially forthright: Where does evil come from? she asks. Then adds: “The need is not so much to focus on where evil comes from as it is to gain increasing understanding of the great, awesome goodness of God and His Christ.” She argues further that where the light of divine Love is recognized, the darkness of evil cannot operate (p. 6).
