Steps away from self

Sometimes it feels like we’re at the mercy of our temperament, our disposition, which may be mostly good, but deteriorates under the stress of circumstances. 

How easy it is to feel all filled up with love and affection as we pray and study quietly! But as the day begins, opportunities (in the guise of difficulties) to decide how we will respond begin at once. A friend who’s always late. A family member who never expresses appreciation for our efforts. A driver who cuts us off in traffic.

Centuries ago, Paul wrote in a letter to the struggling church in Rome: “For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me” (Rom. 7:19, 20).
