More love on a small planet (Part 2)

One of the large metropolitan newspapers has a column in which readers can take pseudonyms and correspond with each other by means of letters published under the heading "Confidential Chat." Sometimes people write to each other for years in this way without learning one another's real names.

"Arbutus" and "Seagull" had been correspondents for decades. They were obviously quite selfless in their concern for each other's happiness and fulfillment.

One day Arbutus's next-door neighbor passed on. Even though they'd been neighbors, they didn't know each other well. Their relationship had been cool and distant—very much the opposite of Arbutus's strong sisterly bond with Seagull.
