Faithful gardeners

They cultivated the soil,
my consciousness,
with tools sure and strong—
the Bible and Science and Health
with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy—
to prepare it well for
seeds of spiritual growth.

They planted the seeds carefully,
deep in spiritually receptive thought,
so they would be safe
from the would-be destructive elements
of mortal mind.

As these gardeners nourished the seeds
with inspiration from Life
and with the light of Truth,
the seeds of thought germinated.

To ensure continuous
growth Spiritward,
the gardeners helped remove
stonelike impediments of
adolescent rebelliousness
and weeds of impurity and unknowing resistance.

When there were storms of youth—
uncontrolled currents of emotional
highs and lows—the gardeners
helped steady me,
seeing me secure in the arms
of my Father-Mother, God.

These were faithful gardeners,
never giving up when
spiritual growth stalled
but always helping me see
the greater promise of fruitage.

Now, as I recall their work
and the fruitage in my life,
a bloom of gratitude opens
full within me for the teachers
who helped raise me
in the garden of Sunday School.
