A prodigal moment

There was a time when I lived life
like it was one endless party
accumulating assets and amusements
struggling for status and accolades
pursuing pleasures wherever I could

But after a while I noticed that
the harder I worked and played
the more money I acquired and spent
the greater my pride and ambition . . .

the more anxious and empty I became
the less secure and satisfied I felt
the fewer real friends I had

Until one day I decided
I was tired of being miserable

It was time to come back to God.

That’s when I remembered that
true joy and worth have nothing to do
with how much I achieve or accrue
with how famous or fabulous I seem
with what others think of me

but everything to do with how fully I identify with God
with how fervently I strive to hear His voice
with how lovingly I reflect His goodness and grace
in my every thought, word, and deed

Because when I mirror the divine Being
when I’m humble and authentic
in each experience, relationship, and trial

it’s like finally coming home from that vacuous party
to find my dear Father-Mother waiting with open arms

like I’d never been gone.
