Unavoidable good
I would have to say that the events of last year have brought me more clearly to the realization that even when bad things seem to be happening, good is really at work.
I’m learning each day that actual reality is spiritual, not material, that human life is not a starting or stopping point, but an opportunity to learn what real life is, and that things are not always as they seem. One event in particular prompts me to say with the Apostle Paul that “I take pleasure in infirmities” (II Corinthians 12:10), and has caused me to consider Mary Baker Eddy’s statement on page 96 of Science and Health, in which she describes “interruptions of the general material routine” and “the breaking up of material beliefs” (p. 96). What at first felt like a personal disaster became an opportunity to see my life and my world in new and higher ways. Prayer took me there.
Having made the decision to retire from library work in June of 2011, I allowed for some time off to garden and enjoy having all three of our grown kids home for part of the summer before undertaking a more active role in the practice of Christian Science. It was a wonderful summer. The yard and gardens hadn’t looked so good in years, and the weather was warm and sunny. The kids, visiting from Japan, California, and Georgia, enjoyed seeing each other, having overcome some personal difficulties in the past. I was so loving my life!
