The gnat and the butterflies

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

Last July, I experienced a memorable glimpse of the nature of God’s thoughts to each of us. No doubt it will stay with me for a long time to come.

It was the middle of my summer vacation, and I was dog sitting for a friend who lived near a large, wooded area. Taking advantage of the beautiful, sunny weather, the dog and I made a habit of strolling every day along a path that winds its way through thick trees and tall grasses. It was a wonderful way to enjoy the blooming flowers, the singing crickets, and all the various signs of the season.

On one particular day, I was distracted from this picturesque setting by the presence of a gnat – one buzzing, obnoxious, and inescapable gnat. It seems funny to react so strongly, but it was really very persistent and annoying! It would dart into my eyes, fly around my ears, and whirl around my head as if it were some orbiting planet.
