"Arrest" those wrong thoughts!

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

A few years ago I had an assignment that required I speak in front of others very frequently. I loved the work, but I felt threatened by the fear of becoming sick and not being able to fulfill my duties.

It wasn’t long after I started this new position that I began having a problem with my throat and it became difficult to talk. There was a swelling that came and went—mostly came—that made it difficult to talk for more than a few minutes at a time.

I think the main lesson I learned, as I addressed this situation through prayer, is that man, God’s idea, can’t be assailed by aggressive suggestions of illness. But, I had to learn this by turning to God in prayer. Prayer helped me to watch my thought to see what I was affirming as actual. Doing this, I realized that I was mistakenly believing that I was a mortal somehow trying to get to be “more spiritual.” Once I realized this, I knew I had a choice to make. I had to choose between believing I was a mortal at the mercy of matter, or a spiritual idea, God’s creation, under divine care.
