Love lifts the burden of caring for others

It’s not unusual to read articles in newspapers and magazines these days about families that are struggling to meet the needs of an older or disabled family member—and the attendant burden that such an effort may involve. As someone who has always found it natural to care for other people, I know what that feels like. Sometimes my own personal problems have been a burden I’ve found hard to carry along with my commitments to others. Then there have been days when I’ve struggled with fatigue and lack of inspiration—especially if the person I’m trying to help is full of ingratitude and complaints.

That probably sounds pretty bleak ... but when I look at my life now, those days of wanting to flee are fewer and farther between. And there is a reason for this—prayer and a deeper understanding of God as infinite Love who is always providing for us.

Over the last 26 years, I have worked as a Christian Science nurse. Although I am not dispensing medicine or giving physical therapy, I help others with physical needs such as bathing, dressing, feeding, mobility, and caring for wounds. Whatever the situation, I’m there to wholeheartedly support the patient’s desire to rely solely on prayer that brings healing—prayer that seeks a clearer vision of their permanent spiritual relationship to God.
