Spirit

Isaiah 57:15, 19

Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. . . . Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord; and I will heal him.

Dakkā’, the Hebrew adjective rendered contrite, relates to being crushed (as a noun, it means dust). It appears in a similar declaration in Psalms 34:18: “The Lord . . . saveth such as be of a contrite [dakkā’] spirit.” A commentary explains, “. . . those who live in the sight of God inevitably become humble.”
