Faithfulness to Sunday services

Originally published in Spanish

When I was four years old, I began attending the local Christian Science church on Sundays with my paternal grandmother. At the time I was the only child there, so I stayed with the adults during the services. Though I was sometimes restless, I enjoyed hearing the readings from the Bible and also from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

When I had started preschool, the preschool teacher recommended that I be taken to a psychologist because she said my behavior was not normal. I wasn’t able to sit still for a long period of time and I was constantly interrupting the classes. Some behavioral tests were performed and the psychologist diagnosed me with attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity. It was a difficult and confusing time in my life.

However, I continued to attend the Sunday services with my grandmother, where I felt a deeper peace than I had ever experienced before. The adults in the service were always so kind, patient, and caring. Gradually, the impulsiveness that seemed to define me began to subside. I went from being a restless, disruptive, hyperactive child to a settled adolescent who is respectful and enjoys listening to others.
