Outside the comfort zone
Recently, I attended my brass band practice with the guest conductor we employ. He regularly takes us out of our comfort zone, and on this day he moved all the chairs so we had to sit in different places. I play the euphonium, a member of the tuba family, and although I was still seated next to my partner, she was now on my right side instead of my left. When we played, I was not comfortable. I couldn’t hear my partner because I was used to having her on my left, and all I could hear was the baritone horn played by the individual now sitting there.
I soon realized that I had become too reliant on my partner, which is also why I had often left the tricky bits to her. The discomfort caused by this realization was my wake-up call to stop swanning around without serious application.
It was time for a thought change.
