Shining a light on the weekly Bible Lessons published in the Christian Science Quarterly®

Reality

Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. . . . And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. . . . But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: that as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

The theological concept of justification relates to absolving a person of sin, bringing to light their right relation to God. Faith is shown to be the means to demonstrating this state of righteousness. Galatians 2:16 has, “. . . a person is made right with God not by following the law, but by trusting in Jesus Christ” (New Century Version)

More than tranquility, “peace with God” points to reconciliation—an end to feeling hostile to or separate from God (see also Ephesians 2:14–18, where the author identifies Christ as “our peace”).
