Locating ourselves spiritually

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, writes in one of her sermons, “Our surety is in our confidence that we are indeed dwellers in Truth and Love, man’s eternal mansion” (Pulpit and Press, p. 3). Thinking about this over the years has led me to more consistently check my internal GPS and consciously locate (or relocate) myself as needed—to check my consciousness and align it with my only true dwelling place: God, who is Truth and Love.

A recent experience brought this home. After several days of seeing Broadway musicals with friends in New York City, one night I went back to my 25th-floor hotel room overlooking Times Square. Everything seemed to be pulsating as I got ready for bed. Billboards flashing messages, throngs of people on the streets below—even the building’s air conditioning seemed to be emanating energy. I went to sleep as usual but awoke with a sense of disorientation and anxiety. I couldn’t tell if it was the noise, the vibration, or my awareness of being above Times Square, but it caused me to feel out of control. I was close to panic. I realized that it was imperative to relocate myself—not physically but spiritually, as a dweller in Truth and Love.
