“Such as I have give I thee”

As I come to see the whole world as my church, I’ve also come to see how alive and active Christ is—everywhere, and in everyone.

In the Bible’s Book of Acts, one of the first things recorded following the Day of Pentecost is the story of Peter and John coming across a lame man who was begging. Peter said to him, “Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk” (3:6). The man was healed. The Christian Church was finding its healing path.

Mary Baker Eddy, who wrote Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and founded a church that illuminates the teachings of the Bible, including those of Christ Jesus, could have said the same thing: “Such as I have give I thee.” She shared with the world the Science of Christ, and countless blessings from the healing Christ have followed.

I have been thinking a lot about church lately and how it relates to my own spiritual growth. When I needed to be healed of a daunting physical problem, I started attending a small Christian Science Society. I soon joined it. The members of that church were such beautiful examples to me of the spirit of Christ. They nurtured me in my time of need, in ways they probably didn’t even realize. The light of divine Love shone in their welcome, in their devotion to God, and in the testimonies of healing they shared at our Wednesday evening meetings.
