Poetry for kids

What’s in your backpack?

Things for school:
pencils, lunch, socks?
Things necessary and not too heavy.
You wouldn’t want bricks or rocks!

But what’s in your spiritual backpack,
the place you keep your thoughts?
It’s not too small, doesn’t fall apart,
and stays with you—never lost.

Let’s be clear
what doesn’t go in here:
wrong thoughts—from nowhere—
making us impatient, hateful,
pushy, unhelpful,
unkind, ungrateful.

Then, what does go in here?
Good thoughts—from God—
making us loving, helpful
calm, kind,
caring, grateful.
