Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

—New King James Version®

Love appears in noun or verb form (including the word beloved) 15 times in verses 7–12, conveying an unmistakable message about God to readers then and now. A Bible authority explains, “Love comes not from the best of the human spirit but from the character of God . . . .”
