I wanted our children to know God

As a young mother, I was seeking God. My husband and I had two small children, and I wanted them to know God and Jesus. Growing up, I’d had many questions, but had found no satisfying answers at the Christian churches I’d attended. I didn’t want to say to our children, “Believe this because you are supposed to.” Nor did I want our children to grow up without a knowledge of the Bible.

I visited various churches and even got a book about most of the religions in America to see if something attracted me. Nothing did. So, humbly, fervently, and desperately, I said to God, “If there is a place I should go with our children, You will have to show me because I have tried everything I know.” And then I stopped actively searching.

Two weeks later, my husband and I went on a fishing trip with another couple. The wife was a Christian Scientist. I knew little of what that meant, except that Christian Scientists didn’t use medicine and had a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper (The Christian Science Monitor). During our trip, this friend injured her foot and sought some time alone for prayer. Later, I saw that she was fine. That made an impression on me, and I wondered if it was her faith that had helped her.
