Where is our faith?

Imagine that you’ve been a fisherman all your life. For months, you have followed a man who talks with authority about God—a teacher whose healing of all kinds of maladies has been stunning. You are beginning to grasp what he’s been explaining.

One day, you and your friends are with him on a boat crossing a large lake, and he’s taking a nap. All of a sudden, the clouds are lowering, the wind is whipping the water. Everyone quickly falls to, manning the sails, steering the boat, racing to help. But the teacher still sleeps. Soon, there’s utter panic. Yet, Jesus has not stirred.

Finally, someone wakes him and shouts that everyone’s about to drown. But Jesus isn’t fazed. He stands, faces the waves, and in a voice full of conviction commands the wind and the waves to be still. In no time, the winds cease, the clouds lift, and the sea is quietly lapping at the sides of the boat. The storm is all gone. There is pure calm. Then Jesus turns and asks a shocking question: “Where is your faith?” (see Luke 8:22–25).
