Everyone is first and foremost a friend—even those who may express the most stridently different opinions to my own.
In early 1910, Mary Baker Eddy made final changes to the wording of an introduction she asked to be read aloud in every Church of Christ, Scientist, prior to the sermon. This “Explanatory Note” gives a brief explanation of the Bible Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly and begins,
“Friends:
“The Bible and the Christian Science textbook are our only preachers.”
