Freed from aggressive flu symptoms
One time, when I was working in a retail organization, several members of the staff were off work for two or three days with flu symptoms. There seemed to be a general sense that it was normal to experience sickness in this way.
However, I had learned in Christian Science about the all-good God that neither knows nor sends sickness, a God that created us spiritual and perfect, the reflection of Himself. So, God alone has power over us, and this gives us power and authority over illness of every kind.
One day at work, though, I felt the same symptoms coming on aggressively that my colleagues were experiencing. On my way home at the end of the day, I had to really stand up mentally to this seeming bully called sickness.
Mary Baker Eddy, author of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and herself a successful healer, explained that the body does not govern man, but God, the divine Mind, does. I was trying to stick with what I knew to be true about myself and not be discouraged.
Science and Health has some strong words to guide us: “Rise in the conscious strength of the spirit of Truth to overthrow the plea of mortal mind, alias matter, arrayed against the supremacy of Spirit” (pp. 390–391). It also encourages: “Suffer no claim of sin or of sickness to grow upon the thought. Dismiss it with an abiding conviction that it is illegitimate, because you know that God is no more the author of sickness than He is of sin” (p. 390).
This helped me to hang in there prayerfully—not to consent or give in to the belief that I could be sick, but to cling faithfully to God. When I got home, I felt so tired and miserable that I just wanted to sleep, but I didn’t consent. When Christ Jesus healed people, they didn’t need to wait for sickness to take its course, and I knew this didn’t have to happen to me, either.
I declared that I am not a fleshly mortal picking up germs from other mortals. I am with God, loved by God, and protected by God. Christ Jesus and Mrs. Eddy, following Jesus’ example, showed how we can heal ourselves and others through acknowledging God’s healing presence and totally relying on God.
Suddenly, I had a “waking-up” experience. I saw that the bodily symptoms had no foundation—they were not created by God and not connected to God, nor to me. They were outlaws and could only fall away. So what was the truth, then? In my true identity as a child of God—the real me—I was as inseparable from God as a ray of light is from the sun. I was safe under God’s law and government. I was at peace, and I knew I was healed.
I slept soundly that night, and there was not a trace of any symptoms the next morning. I returned to work as usual, healed.
