Burn quickly healed

Over the holidays this past winter, my wife and I hosted a dinner gathering at our house. After baking a chicken dish in a large frying pan that has a metal handle, my wife asked me to help remove the heavy pan from the oven. Using several hot pads, I took the dish out and placed it on the stove top. My wife went on with dinner preparations, but a few minutes later asked me to carve the chicken in the pan.

Totally forgetting that this pan had just been baking in a 400 degree oven for over an hour, I grabbed the handle with one hand. My first thought was “No! An idea cannot be damaged.” Through my study of the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, I had a growing understanding that man is not material, but a spiritual idea of divine Mind. I reasoned that God, Mind, could not be burned, so an idea held in this Mind could not be burned either.

I excused myself and walked upstairs to my office to quiet my thought and pray. I wrapped a towel around my hand and chose not to examine it. I’ve learned that Christian Science treatment begins with God and emphasis is placed on the fact that God, good, is the only cause. I vehemently denied the suggestion that there was pain or pleasure in matter, and realized that pain existed only in mortal mind as a suggestion. God, Mind, knows only that which is spiritual and good. And I, as God’s reflection (what God is knowing), could not know or experience pain.
