Daughter’s jaw quickly healed

Our two daughters grew up in rural New England. They loved climbing in trees, riding horses, and playing rough sports like hockey and soccer. Bumps and bruises were ordinary occurrences and quickly forgotten.

One day, when my younger daughter was seven, she was riding her bicycle down the hill our home was set on. The brakes were applied by pushing backward on the pedals, but when the wheels began to spin too fast, she was unable to put her feet on the pedals to slow down. From inside the house, I saw her as she flew over the handle bars and fell, landing on her face on the dirt road.

My wife was standing outside, and she immediately went to pick her up as I came out of the house. The same thing had happened to me when I was a boy, and my first thought was to comfort my daughter, assuming she would recover quickly. As her mother carried her into the house in her arms, I noticed that my daughter’s jaw appeared to be displaced.

My love and compassion for our daughter made me want to choose the best path for her.

I considered seeking medical help for our daughter, as my wife was new to our church and was accustomed to medical attention. However, I had relied on spiritual healing all of my life and had always found it effective. My love and compassion for our daughter made me want to choose the best path for her. To my mind, that was clearly Christian healing: safe, sure, and comforting. I suggested to my wife that we turn to prayer for healing for our daughter, and she trusted to try this path first.

We made our daughter as comfortable as we could on a bed in our living room, and we prayed silently. I don’t remember exactly what ideas we prayed with, only that we worked to understand that our daughter’s spiritual perfection was intact and undamaged. My wife and I were determined to do what was best for our daughter, and so I also called a Christian Science practitioner for help. We did not speak for long. With courage and honesty she claimed my daughter’s true, spiritual, perfect nature—none other than what Christ Jesus taught. I saw that my daughter was God’s reflection, and a reflection can have no imperfection. God’s reflection cannot express deformity in any way. I knew this to be the truth about the spiritual nature of man that I had learned in my youth, the proof of which I had seen in healings I had already experienced.

The practitioner’s reply was not elaborate, but the effect on my thinking was wonderful and immediate. I felt fear lift from my consciousness, like a window shade raised to let in the light.

When I walked down the stairway to the kitchen where my wife and elder daughter were making Easter eggs, my younger daughter walked in from the other side of the room. Freed from pain, a beaming smile on her face, she immediately joined her mother and sister in the Easter preparations. I could see that her jaw was perfectly healed and in place, as though nothing had ever happened. The abrasions on her face and knees from the fall healed soon after, as well, with no scars remaining.

This healing has been an inspiration to me for many years. I have often thought of the Bible promise, “Thy right hand hath holden me up” (Ps. 18:35) and held my own palm up, remembering God’s constant care.
