Quick healing of illness
One Sunday night, in December 2009, I realized that I’d had the sniffles and a scratchy throat for a couple of days. I’d been busy and enjoying life so much that I gave these symptoms little credence. However, when my energy level dropped and I began feeling weak, that got my attention right away.
At first I felt so weak that praying for myself didn’t seem possible, and I thought of calling a Christian Science practitioner for metaphysical support. But before I did that, I recognized that all I was thinking about was feeling better physically.
I’ve been a student of Christian Science long enough to know that I’m not interested in trying to make “sick matter” well. What I am interested in is the kind of healing, even for physical ailments, in which adjustments come from spiritual growth, a change in my thinking. Spiritual growth is synonymous with increased spiritual understanding, or a better understanding of God and of my relationship to Him. This necessarily includes everyone else’s relationship to God, as well.
As a student of Christian Science, I’ve found that opportunities for spiritual growth are readily available. In fact, when I read any Christian Science literature, it’s hard not to feel spiritually inspired! Of course, when I’m praying about a specific problem, I want to be cherishing the specific, pertinent ideas that will correct any errors in my thinking and lead to healing.
In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, there’s a statement known as “the scientific statement of being” (p. 468). It’s a paragraph consisting of six short sentences that have been instrumental in countless verified healings experienced by students of Christian Science. To address the symptoms I was experiencing, I decided to work with this powerful statement in study and prayer until I felt I’d experienced spiritual growth. I was encouraged to do so by another quote from Science and Health: “Realize the presence of health and the fact of harmonious being, until the body corresponds with the normal conditions of health and harmony” (p. 412).
After reading “the scientific statement of being” aloud several times, I was led to three Bible verses, First John 3:1–3, which are read in conjunction with this statement at all Christian Science Sunday church services. I read them aloud several times from the King James Bible, which I use regularly, and then from several other Bible translations. One of the latter had a slightly different nuance, and I experienced a change in my consciousness that felt like the growth and healing I was seeking. It was from The Living Bible, and asserted the fact that “we are already God’s children, right now,” before concluding, “And everyone who really believes this will try to stay pure because Christ is pure” (I John 3:2, 3).
What resonated with me was that trying to stay pure is something I prayerfully and practically work at on an ongoing basis. As I reflected a bit longer on that citation, I felt my prayers were effective.
My energy begin to return and soon fully normalized, and all the symptoms of illness disappeared. This occurred late that same Sunday night,—the complete physical healing taking less than half an hour after I decided to pray with “the scientific statement of being.”
It’s thrilling to be a student of Christian Science, where the Bible and its companion, Science and Health, become our beloved tools—available 24/7 for solving life’s challenges—and God is glorified!
