I'VE HAD MANY WONDERFUL EXPERIENCES sharing Christian Science that have begun in such diverse locations as an in-town store, my high school reunion, and the health club, to name just a few! This has happened as I've increasingly recognized the inherent hungering in everyone to understand their spiritual nature, and as Mary Baker Eddy stated so clearly, "... Christian Science meets a yearning of the human race for spirituality" (Science and Health, p. 111). When my heart is open and willing, I find that opportunities to share the Science I love so dearly come on an almost daily basis.
One very meaningful experience began at my local health club. About five years ago, I met a fellow club member after his girlfriend had reengaged with Christian Science after many years. He was longing to understand spirituality and its place in his life, beyond his Jewish upbringing. As a young boy he had considered becoming a rabbi, and as a young adult had studied a variety of religions and spiritual philosophies. Most significantly, when a baby, he was apparently healed of blindness through the prayers of a monk.
Our journey together began with him quietly listening to the many early morning conversations I enjoyed with his wife-to-be and with others new to the teachings of Christian Science, who gathered around us in the socializing area of the club. The conversations were vibrant, energizing, and fun—right there in the space between the squash courts and fitness rooms. And over time, this sharing of Christian Science has resulted in individuals coming to Christian Science church services and lectures, experiencing healings, and taking class instruction. Some are now reading Science and Health, and others are listening to Your Daily Lift on The Mother Church's website.
Gradually, my inquisitive friend began to actively engage in the informal chats at the club. About a year after we met and began these exchanges—which soon expanded to other times of day and other places—he and his fiancee asked me to read from the Bible and Science and Health at their wedding. Hearing the readings at the wedding proved to be a significant moment for him. He described them as "so spiritual," without a sense of denominational limitation.
After the wedding, the conversations about Christian Science continued—and so did the questions. There were many hours of challenging and inspiring exchanges. Soon he began meeting other Christian Scientists, and their life stories touched him deeply. After a few years, he began to attend a Christian Science branch church in his neighborhood on a regular basis, and after much thought and prayer, what had began as informal chats at a health club, moved him to join that church. He said he wanted to make a public commitment to Christian Science and felt church membership was an important step.
He is now reading Science and Health in earnest, and has made it his constant companion. As he reflects on his footsteps in "the world of Spirit," he says it is especially meaningful to him to understand the Science behind the healing of his childhood blindness. "I believe I've always been a Christian Scientist," he says. "I've just realized it through this journey." Today he shares his experiences with others, and the circle of inspiration, sharing, and healing continues to ripple outward.
For me, sharing Christian Science and Science and Health is a natural, vital, and integral dimension of who I am and of my healing practice. css
