AUTHOR AND GRAPHIC ARTIST Ilene Winn-Lederer has completed her five-year book project, Between Heaven & Earth: An Illuminated Torah Commentary, just released from Pomegranate Communications.

The first five books of the Bible, the Torah, are divided into 54 portions, or parashiyot (singular parashah). Each week of the Jewish year, a portion is read and studied; every Jewish congregation in the world reads from the same parashah each week, and the Torah is read in sequence through the year.

In the book, each of the 54 weekly portions of the Torah is illustrated on a two-page spread, accented by Hebrew and English text excerpts rendered in the artist's own calligraphy. Following the illustrations is a section titled "AfterImages: Artist's Notes," in which Winn-Lederer details the Biblical story, symbols, and personal reflections that guided each illustration.
