DAVID—A HERO FOR ALL TIMES

David. One of the greatest kings in the Bible. Before becoming king, he was a warrior. And before becoming a warrior, he was a shepherd. In the Hebrew language that David spoke, his name meant "beloved."

MANY HUNTERS IN ANCIENT TIMES USED SLINGS. A SLING WAS USUALLY MADE OF A LEATHER STRAP WITH A POUCH ATTACHED TO IT.

As the youngest of eight brothers, David took care of his father's sheep. Many days and nights he spent away from home taking his sheep to new pastures and keeping a watchful eye over them. When a lion or a bear attacked his flock and stole a lamb, he would rescue the lamb. David had a slingshot and became quite expert at hurling stones to fight the attackers off. But most important, he knew that God was with him, helping and protecting him and the sheep. Knowing this gave him great courage and strength.
